Mechanix Heavy-Duty Glove
„Breacher up“ Sometimes it is necessary to use heavy gear to get access to a house or a vehicle. Back in the days I have just used the thin issued leather-gloves when I had to do that job. The riot-gloves are very well padded but it is almost impossible to use the radio, handgun or mace with them. But I had to learn it the hard way that the thin gloves were a bad choice.
One time I slid with the strike-face of the ram, off the lock-case and hit the door-leaf. A large chunk of wood broke out of the door and was thrown into the apartment. I could open the door with a second strike and the entry was fine. Just as a team-mate told me, I found out that my left hand was bleeding. I ripped my hand open trough the thin gloves, as I hit trough the door with my first strike. Now I was fed up. I needed a new glove.
Till I found my preference for Mechanix-Gloves, I tried to keep myself over water with different types of Moto-Cross-gloves. So I found the Mechanix Heavy-Duty. But I tell you first, it has no Kevlar-lining, no liquid-barrier and I believe that it is not the right glove for just walking the beat. And as a shooting-glove only, you will find the HD to well padded too. If you have to work with heavy equipment or if you need some more protection on your hand, but you still want to be able to operate your mike, torch, firearm or even your cell phone, then the HD could close your gap.
The back of the hand is made of two-way-spandex, which takes care of the tight but comfortable fit and ventilation. The knuckles are padded and covered with a durable and flexible synthetic material. On the back of the hand and the fingers you will find flexible, anatomically-designed, molded thermal-plastic-rubber rib-panels for protection.
Genuine Leather covers the light padding on the palm. They are not to thick, offer a fair protection and a good grip. Stretch-Lycra panels between the fingers add comport and ventilation. The HD is secured with a though hook and loop strap to the wrist.
You still have a good sense in your fingers, even in face of all the padding and the protectors. Precision-work like using a cell-phone or writing a report by hand or typing is not an easy task but it can be done.
The use of typical police or military equipment is no problem at all. The Heavy-Duty even passed my “Cent-Test”. In the “Cent-Test” I put a one-cent-coin on a glass table and lift it up with the gloves on.
There are always two sides of the story. Till today I never had a problem with the mechanix-gloves I own. One reason why I like them so much is that the seams are so good that they don’t sting in your hand. But this HD had a bad seam right from the beginning. After a time of intensive use the problem went away a bit. May be mine is a Friday-afternoon-glove. The leather-palm is very comfortable and it has a good grip. But too bad, you can’t throw the Heavy-Duty into the washing machine like the other Mechanix cause of the leather.
In Germany you get them at K&W Import, www.mechanix.info .
That is definitely a pro-service shop!
I hope you like my Review on the HK Ally.
